Constitution of India

Indira Gandhi won such sweeping victories in the elections of 1971 and 1972 that she was soon accused of electoral fraud. In 1975, she suspended the constitution and declared a state of emergency.

Shortly thereafter, a customer in a large Delhi bookstore asked the assistant for a copy of the Constitution of India. "I am sorry, sir," the clerk tartly replied, "but we don't stock periodicals."

[Trivia: Gandhi was assassinated in 1984 - by a member of her own bodyguard.]
