Kiss

During the production of Notorious (1946), Alfred Hitchcock arranged for Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman to engage in a kissing scene which lasted much longer than the three seconds permitted by Joseph Breen's Production Code Office; Bergman and Grant kiss for three seconds, talk briefly, resume kissing, lean away for a moment, kiss again, nibble on one another's ears, and continue kissing...

In the theater, the scene played as a sensational prolonged kiss. But, because the couple never kissed for more than three seconds, the censors were required to allow it.

Hitchcock, Sir Alfred Joseph (1889-1980) British director [noted for his sophisticated cinematic effects, as evidenced in such classic suspense films as The 39 Steps (1935), Strangers on a Train (1951), Psycho (1960) and The Birds (1963)]
