Jerry-Pot"As vicar of St Mary Magdalene, Oxford," Colin Stephenson once recalled, "I found myself custodian of the Martyrs' Memorial which had been erected in what was then the churchyard as a counterblast to the teaching of the Oxford Movement. Generations of undergraduates had climbed it leaving an article of bedroom furniture on top as a record of their feat. During my incumbency some young men were caught having pulled a pinnacle or two down in their attempt and I had to discuss with the proctors what measure could be taken to protect the Memorial. I said, 'Could not a referendum be taken in the university to find out the number of undergraduates who would like to see a jerry-pot on top, and if it proves a large number one could be cemented on.' The Senior Proctor said reprovingly, 'I sense a point of view coming on, Father Stephenson.'"
