Jerry-Pot

"As vicar of St Mary Magdalene, Oxford," Colin Stephenson once recalled, "I found myself custodian of the Martyrs' Memorial which had been erected in what was then the churchyard as a counterblast to the teaching of the Oxford Movement. Generations of undergraduates had climbed it leaving an article of bedroom furniture on top as a record of their feat. During my incumbency some young men were caught having pulled a pinnacle or two down in their attempt and I had to discuss with the proctors what measure could be taken to protect the Memorial. I said, 'Could not a referendum be taken in the university to find out the number of undergraduates who would like to see a jerry-pot on top, and if it proves a large number one could be cemented on.' The Senior Proctor said reprovingly, 'I sense a point of view coming on, Father Stephenson.'"
