Fifth Column Warning

US Ambassador to Germany James Gerard, having previously described Arthur Zimmerman as "just and friendly toward America," was surprised when, shortly after his appointment as Germany's foreign minister in 1916, Zimmerman warned the United States not to enter World War I. "There are half a million trained Germans in America," Zimmerman declared, "who will join the Irish and start a revolution." "In that case," Gerard retorted, "there are half a million lamp posts to hang them on."
