Maharishi Mahesh Yogi: Hindu GuruIn 1968, Mia Farrow accompanied the Beatles, Patti Boyd, and some other women to Rishakesh, India, to study Transcendental Meditation with the Hindu guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi at his ashram (from a Sanskrit word connoting toil and austerity). Ringo Starr left early, complaining about the food, followed by Paul McCartney. The rest of the group stayed on, however, until one day they too were suddenly prompted to leave. Why? The "guru" made a pass at Farrow!
[The Maharishi later further annoyed the Beatles by releasing an album of his lectures and dubbing himself "the Beatles' spiritual teacher." "Sexy Sadie," which John Lennon wrote about him, originally featured the following line: "Maharishi, you little twat/Who the f--- do you think you are?/Oh, you c--t."]
[Trivia: Indian Major General Kulwant Singh once suggested that Yogi's teachings offered a nonballistic alternative to America's proposed missile-defense system.]
