Brutal BrahmsJohannes Brahms could be brutally sarcastic and rude - even to his friends. He once arrived to visit a fellow composer of minor note and learned that his host was busy. The man's wife apologized, explaining that, although her husband composed so much that he rarely had time to break from work, on this occasion he had gone outside to play with his children. "Thank God," Brahms replied. "It should happen more often!"
[The composers Hugo Wolf and Hans Rott both developed psychotic obsessions with Brahms's lack of appreciation for the aesthetic ambitions of the younger generation. Indeed, before he was institutionalized, Rott experienced a paranoid fear that Brahms had placed a bomb beneath his carriage.]
Brahms, Johannes (1833-1897) German composer [noted for his prolific output of orchestral and chamber music, songs and choral works, among them A German Requiem (1868) and the
Alto Rhapsody (1869)]
