Vane Sisters

Vladimir Nabokov was once dismayed to learn that The Vane Sisters had been rejected for publication. The reason? "We don't print acrostics [word squares]."

[Nabokov's A Matter of Chance was similarly dismissed with the words: "We don't print anecdotes about cocainists."]

[Trivia: For from writing a linear narrative, Nabokov typically composed his novels on index cards while standing at a lectern, an arrangement allowing him to 'shuffle' his story into its final form.]

Nabokov, Vladimir (1899-1977) Russian novelist [noted for such novels as Lolita (1955), Pale Fire (1962), Pnin, and Ada (1969)]
