Stalin & the Pope

At the end of World War II, FDR suggested that Pius XII should be among those consulted on the fate of post-war Europe. Stalin disagreed. "How many divisions," he contemptuously asked, "does the pope have?"

[This line was later used by Israeli diplomatic historian Michael Oren with regard to Sari Nusseibeh, the Palestine Liberation Organization's worldly and moderate (if toothless) chief representative in Jerusalem. "Sari is a wonderful guy," he said, "but how many divisions does he have?"]

Stalin, Joseph [born Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili] ["The Man of Steel"] (1879-1953) Russian Soviet politician, general secretary of the Communist Party (1922–1953), premier of the USSR (1941–1953) [noted for his exile of Leon Trotsky (1929), his purges of other military and political opponents, his forced collectivization of agriculture and industry (guided by demanding 'five-year plans'), and his role in the Allied victory in World War II]
