George Bush: Marin County Hot TubsWhile discussing John Walker Lindh one day in 2002, George Bush (Sr.) referred to the California resident (who famously fought with the Taliban in Afghanistan) as "some misguided Marin County hot-tubber."
Marin Independent Journal executive editor Jackie Kerwin was not amused. Nor were her readers, whom she urged to write to the former president. Sure enough, letters soon poured in and news outlets around America reported the story.
Bush promptly wrote a letter of his own to Kerwin to apologize. "Dear Ms. Kerwin," it read, "Call off the dogs, please. I surrender. I will never use 'hot tub' and 'Marin County' in the same sentence again." He then followed up with a personal call. "He was a nice guy," Kerwin later reported. "His letter reflects a real sense of humor, and so did his comments." Bush's opening line during their telephone conversation? "He gets on the phone," Kerwin recalled, "and says, 'Hot tubs for sale!'"
[Trivia: Bush was chauffeured to school - during the Great Depression.]
