Adolf Hittler: Alive and Well

"Adolf Hittler is alive and well. But probably not the guy you're thinking about," Buck Wolf reported in 1998. "Unlike the Nazi leader, this gentleman spells his last name with two Ts, disdains fascism, and never aspired to take over the world. He's a 61-year-old retired school bus driver from Landeck, Austria, and he doesn't like to be teased.

"'My whole life this has been a problem,' he says. 'Just try checking into a hotel with my name. I'd get calls in the middle of the night from jokers who wanted to say, 'Heil Hitler' and other stupid jokes about gas chambers. But it is in part my choice. I decided not to change my name. I thought it would be an insult to my parents.'"

[An "Adolf Hitler" was once listed in the telephone directory for Bossier City, Louisiana. The number was soon unlisted. (Only about 2 percent of German men were named Adolf before World War II and the name has since gone out of fashion.)]

[Trivia: "A man who legally changed his name to Ubiquitous Perpetuity God began serving a nine-month sentence for indecent exposure Wednesday," USA Today reported in February 1996.
"God, 68, has been convicted 18 times for similar offenses since 1978. His latest arrest came October 26, when he exposed himself to a woman waiting in line at a coffee shop. He said he did it so that women "could have some type of awareness of God," according to police reports.
"Marin Superior Court Judge Lynn O'Malley Taylor addressed the defendant as "Mr. God" at a hearing Tuesday, and sentenced him to nine months in Marin County Jail. He will be released to a residential mental health facility if one agrees to admit him..."]

Hitler, Adolf (1889-1945) Austrian-born German fascist politician and demagogue, founder of the German Nazi Party, chancellor of the Third Reich (1933-1945) [noted for his aggressive nationalist philosophy (as embodied in his book Mein Kampf, 1925-1927); for his invasion of Poland (1939), precipitating the outbreak of World War II; and for his regime's "Final Solution": the extermination of several million European homosexuals, Gypsies and Jews]
