Soulful Soil

During World War I, the poet Philip Thomas was asked what he thought he was fighting for. Without hesitation, he bent down and collected a handful of dirt. "Literally," he replied, crumbling it between his fingers, "for this."

[He was killed in action in 1917.]

Thomas, Philip Edward (1878-1917) English poet and critic [noted for his various poems]
