Joseph Wilson: Staring ContestFollowing the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait (in 1990), Joseph Wilson, America's ambassador in Iraq, engaged in several months of negotiations with Iraqi officials, culminating in a tense meeting (on August 6, 1990) with Saddam Hussein himself. Surrounded by several of his cronies, Saddam simply stared at Wilson, who simply stared back. "I'm thinking to myself," Wilson later recalled, "he must not know that I'm the father of twins, and we have staring contests all the time!"
[At last Saddam asked him about the news from Washington. "You're better off asking your foreign minister," Wilson replied. "He's the one with the satellite dish." When Saddam laughed, Wilson almost laughed back. "It dawned on me," he recalled later, "that the last thing I wanted beamed around the world was a picture of me yukking it up with Saddam Hussein."]
