David Letterman: Oscar HostIn 1995, David Letterman hosted the Academy Awards. He did not host again...
"This was an Oscars with a Top 10 list, a Stupid Pet Trick and an Oscars notable for the odd line that kept inexplicably resurfacing: 'Uma, Oprah... Oprah, Uma,'" E! Online reported. "But one of the biggest planned stunts of the night was a last-minute cancellation. In the press release that announced he was hosting the show, Letterman said: 'The whole show will be 40 minutes long, and we'll be giving away cars!'
"And while he was hardly serious about the length, he did plan to hand out a car in a rigged raffle. Letterman's first choice to win the auto was actress Jessica Tandy, but his staff quickly substituted Sally Field - when they learned Tandy had died 18 months earlier."
[After bombing in a dress rehearsal, the raffle gag was quietly scrapped.]
