Vatican Wag

Famed photographer Yousuf Karsh was once commissioned to take an official portrait of the pope. He was accompanied by Bishop Fulton Sheen to the Vatican, where Pope John warily watched Karsh set up his equipment before turning to Sheen. "God knew seventy-seven years ago that someday I would be pope," he remarked with a sigh. "Why couldn't he have made me a little more photogenic!"

John XXIII, [born Angelo Roncalli] (1881-1963) Italian pope (1958-63) [noted for his popularity as a leader, his many reforms, and his work for Church unity and reconciliation between world powers]
