Tycho's NoseThough quarrelsome and arrogant, the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe was one of the most colorful characters in the history of science - literally. After having most of his nose cut off in a midnight duel in 1565 (over a mathematical argument), young Tycho made a replacement - out of gold, silver and wax.
[Trivia: In September 2003, customs officers at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam opened a smelly Nigerian suitcase - and were shocked to find it packed with some 2,000 rotting baboon noses in plastic bags.]
Brahe, Tycho (1546-1601) Danish astronomer [noted for the accuracy of his astronomical observations (which formed the basis for Johannes Kepler's laws of planetary motion)]
