Love Machine? The graphic depictions of masturbation in Philip Roth's 1969 novel Portnoy's Complaint came as a shock to many readers. One day, Jacqueline Susann, whose own novel (The Love Machine) was competing with Roth's for the top spot on bestseller lists, was asked what she thought of her scandalous rival. "He's a fine writer," she replied, "but I wouldn't want to shake hands with him!"
["When a man and woman are trying to have sex, he will often climax before she is ready," Dave Barry once observed. "Sometimes he will climax before she is, technically, in the room."]
