Root Beer?

Charles Elmer Hires did not originally plan to call his new soft drink "Root Beer." Until a friend convinced him that many consumers would be reluctant to drink it, Hires wanted to call it... "Root Tea".

[Many soft drink manufacturers have changed the names of their beverages, often with disastrous effects. Coca-Cola, which famously blundered with the introduction of "New Coke" in the early 1980s, introduced its first drink in 1886. Its name? "Esteemed Brain Tonic and Intellectual Beverage."]

[Trivia: One famous soft drink was named by chemist Charles Alderton in honor of the father of a girl he was dating. The man's name? Dr. Charles Kenneth Pepper.]
