To the Hilton?Cary Grant once telephoned hotel mogul Conrad Hilton in Istanbul, Turkey, with an urgent question: Why, the actor demanded to know, had his breakfast order at the Plaza Hotel come with only one and a half - rather than two - English muffins?
[Hilton's explanation? A hotel efficiency report had found that most patrons only ate three of four halves. After Grant's complaint, the hotel changed its policy and began serving two complete muffins. (Grant thereafer spoke of forming an "English Muffin-Lovers Society" - members of which would report any hotel or restaurant which listed muffins on the menu and served fewer than two!)]
[Trivia: Grant was hardly a miser. He donated his entire fee for Arsenic and Old Lace ($100,000) to the U.S. War Relief Fund and gave his earnings from The Philadelphia Story to the British war effort.]
