Jim Schoenfeld & Don KoharskiOn May 5th, 1988, the New Jersey Devils suffered a crushing 6-1 defeat in the conference finals at the hands of the Boston Bruins. Devils coach Jim Schoenfeld blamed the loss in part on the officiating of referee Don Koharski. Indeed, Schoenfeld offered Koharski a word of advice beneath Brendan Byrne Arena after the game. The advice? "Have another donut, you fat pig!"
[The classic film Wayne's World (1992) features a donut shop owned by former Chicago Blackhawk Stan Mikita (a reference to the popular Canadian chain created by hockey legend Tim Horton). The name of the cop in the donut shop? Officer Koharski!]
