Hoare-Laval

In 1935, British foreign secretary Sir Samuel Hoare reached an agreement with his French counterpart, Pierre Laval, which settled Mussolini's territorial claims in Abyssinia (Ethiopia). By the Hoare-Laval Pact, signed in Paris, the disputed land was virtually ceded to the Italians with no strings attached. "No more coals to Newcastle," George V said in disgust, "and no more Hoares to Paris."

George V, (1865-1936) British monarch, King of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and emperor of India (1910–1936)
