Biblical Metaphor

The first children's book published in America was written by the Puritan preacher John Cotton and printed in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1646. Its title? "Spiritual Milk for Boston Babes in Either England Drawn from the Breasts of Both Testaments for Their Souls' Nourishment."


Cotton, John (1584-1652) English-born American cleric, vicar of Saint Botolph's Church in England [noted for his flight to America (following his summons to court for his Puritanism) and for his subsequent civic and religious leadership in Boston]
